People often ask me what somatic coaching actually is, as though it might be a kind of massage, or perhaps a form of therapy with a different name. It's neither, exactly. Somatic coaching is the practice of listening to the body as a source of wisdom, rather than treating it as a vehicle that simply carries the mind around.

The Body Remembers

Our minds are wonderful at explaining things, at building stories that make sense of what has happened to us. But the body keeps its own record, often long after the mind has moved on. A tightness in the chest that appears every time a certain topic comes up. A held breath. A pattern of collapse in the shoulders that has nothing to do with posture and everything to do with a lifetime of making ourselves smaller.

Somatic work doesn't bypass the mind, it simply makes room for the body to speak too. Sometimes that looks like breath work. Sometimes it looks like simply noticing, out loud, what is happening physically in a moment of emotion. Slowly, the nervous system learns that it is safe to feel, safe to be witnessed, safe to come back into the present moment rather than bracing for the next one.

Why This Matters Now

We live in a culture that rewards disconnection from the body, endless hours at a desk, endless scrolling, endless deferral of rest. Coming home to the body is a quiet act of resistance. It is also, I've found, the fastest route back to feeling truly alive.

If you've ever left a therapy session feeling like you understood your pattern perfectly but somehow couldn't shift it, this might be why. Understanding lives in the mind. Change often lives in the body. My work is about helping you meet both.
