This six week course will introduce complete beginners to the basic principles of yoga from a philosophical view.  It will offer grounding of some of the key yoga postures and help you understand alignment, benefits and contraindications as well as giving you more insight of your own body and its needs.  We will explore breath work (pranayama) and meditation and how these both help connect with the practice of yoga.

This course is ideal for complete beginners or yoga students with less than a year’s yoga practice. Limited to 10 spaces.

Week One: 

What is Yoga? Reference to the Yoga Sutras and introduction to the Eight Limbs of Yoga 

Breath work: full yogic breath 

Brief explanation about different styles of yoga 

Warm ups: how to release old tensions from the body and free the joints in preparation for posture work (Asana) 

Postures: Cat & Cow pose (Marjaryasana & Bitilasana), Downward Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana), Corpse pose (Savasana)

Week Two: 

The importance of alignment, Sthira (Stability) and Sukha (Ease) in your practice 

Drishti: learn to visually focus during your practice

Introduction to Standing Postures: their purpose and benefits 

Postures: Mountain (Tadasana), Warrior l (Virabhadrasana l), Warrior ll (Virabhadrasana ll), Triangle (Trikonasana), Tree (Vrksasana).

Week Three: 

Useful Props: belts, blocks & bricks 

Introduction to Seated Postures: Forward Bends and Twists – their purpose and benefits 

Postures: Staff pose (Dandasana), Seated Forward Bend (Paschimottanasana), Head-To-Knee Forward Bend (Janu Sirsasana), Boat Pose (Navasana), Bound Angle pose (Baddha Konasana), Half-Lord-Of-The-Fishes pose (Ardha Matsyendrasana)

Week Four: 

Philosophy: how to apply yogic principles (Yamas and Niyamas) to daily life 

Breathwork (Pranayama): importance of the breath and breathing exercises including Alternate Nostril Breathing (Nadi Shodhana)

Week Five: 

Meditation (Dhyana): where to start and simple techniques 

Introduction to Backbends: their purpose and benefits 

Postures: Locust pose (Salambhasana), Cobra pose (Bhujangasana), Bridge pose (Setu Bandha)

Week Six: 

Developing your own Personal Practice: structure and helpful suggestions 

Full class practice including elements of breathwork, postures and meditation.  Complete with guided relaxation.
